As August 2026 draws to a close, the world's climate scientists are watching the Pacific Ocean with a mixture of awe and dread. El Niño (the periodic warming of sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean) is back, and this time it's breaking every rule in the book. The El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) is the single biggest driver of year-to-year climate variability on Earth, influencing weather patterns across six continents. Right now, the weekly Niño 3.4 index stands at plus 2.7 degrees Celsius, firmly in El Niño territory. NOAA's (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) Climate Prediction Center currently gives a greater than 90 percent chance of a very strong event during autumn and winter 2026-2027, with a 69 percent probability that the October through December season will exceed every El Niño in the historical record going back to 1950. Some ensemble forecast members are showing values above 4 degrees, which would be completely off the historical chart. For the UK, the impacts are both indirect and unavoidable. El Niño doesn't just warm the tropics, it reshapes the entire Northern Hemisphere storm track. The phenomenon energizes the subtropical jet stream, creating powerful temperature contrasts across the North Atlantic when it collides with cold polar air. Those contrasts spawn deeper, faster-moving low-pressure systems. Translation: more storms, more rain, more wind. The Met Office expects El Niño to increase the chances of wetter, stormier conditions for northwestern Europe, including the UK, in the coming autumn and early winter. Seasonal forecasts show above-normal autumn rainfall across much of the continent, the result of a more westerly flow from the Atlantic low-pressure area bringing in moisture and increasing precipitation potential. Historical data backs this up. Analysis of past strong El Niño winters suggests the UK experienced 8 to 12 named storms per winter season, compared to a long-term average of 6 to 7. The 1997-98 winter, the closest historical match to 2026's strong El Niño, brought unusually warm conditions to the UK in December, and January 1998 saw heavy rainfall in many western regions. For the 2026-27 winter specifically, forecasters project a 60 percent probability of an above-average storm season (defined as 10 or more named storms affecting the UK), with the highest-risk window running from November through February. But there's a twist in the El Niño playbook for Britain. While early to mid-winter typically brings mild, wet, and windy conditions, El Niño can also be associated with colder and calmer late winter periods in the UK. This creates a three-phase pattern: warm and wet early on, followed by a potential cold snap in late winter, then a return to near-normal conditions. It's not a guarantee, because other climate drivers like the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation (QBO), and the stratospheric polar vortex can all modulate or mask the El Niño signal. The QBO is currently in a westerly phase and is expected to persist through autumn, which generally supports milder conditions. The global picture is even more dramatic. El Niño is already driving well-below-normal rainfall in India, where the summer monsoon is running significantly behind schedule. Southern Africa, northeastern Australia, and parts of the Amazon face heightened drought risk. Indonesia has seen more than 200,000 hectares burn in wildfires, while reports suggest southwestern Europe has experienced significant fire activity. And then there's the temperature record. El Niño events drive up global average temperature by releasing more heat from the ocean into the atmosphere, particularly in the calendar year following the winter peak of the event. Dr Nick Dunstone, a Met Office scientist, warns that 2027 is very likely to replace 2024 as the warmest year on record and will be another year to temporarily exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial period. In 2024, global temperatures already breached that threshold, the limit set by international commitments to curb global warming. The autumn outlook for the UK is already taking shape. Seasonal models show a strong consensus for above-average temperatures across autumn 2026, with a tilt toward wetter-than-average conditions. September is likely to start with the tail end of summer conditions, but Atlantic frontal systems will reassert themselves through the month, and the second half is typically more unsettled than the first. October is one of the UK's most unpredictable months, capable of delivering anything from a golden second summer under persistent high pressure to the first significant Atlantic storms of the season. November is reliably unsettled, with fog and frost appearing in inland areas and the first snowfall events of the season typically occurring in Scotland and high-ground areas of northern England. The practical implication: outdoor events in October and November face elevated disruption risk, and anyone planning travel should build in flexibility.
