After ten years of letting Microsoft Edge monopolize 4K Netflix streaming on Windows, Google Chrome has quietly rolled out support for Ultra HD (UHD) content. Netflix confirmed the change by updating its support documentation, though Google itself has stayed silent on the matter, likely because admitting a ten-year delay isn't exactly a victory lap worth taking. The technical requirements remain demanding. You need Windows 11 with the latest updates installed, a Netflix subscription that includes 4K streaming (the Premium tier), and a reasonably modern graphics card. Netflix specifies at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 or newer, an AMD Radeon RX 400 Series or later, an Intel 7th generation Core processor or newer, or an AMD Ryzen chip. Your display must support 4K at 60Hz with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection) 2.2 compliance, and you need a stable internet connection capable of handling the bandwidth. Microsoft Edge gained 4K Netflix playback in 2016, making it the only Windows browser capable of streaming Ultra HD content from the platform for an entire decade. The exclusivity was tied to digital rights management (DRM) technology and codec support that Chrome either couldn't or wouldn't implement. While Edge supported the necessary PlayReady DRM and hardware acceleration for protected 4K content, Chrome users were stuck at 1080p or 720p depending on their subscription tier. Mac users face a different landscape entirely. Chrome on macOS still doesn't support 4K Netflix streaming. If you want 4K on a Mac, Safari version 14 or later remains your only option. The browser fragmentation creates a frustrating user experience where your operating system, not just your subscription tier, determines your streaming quality. The timing of Chrome's 4K support arrival is curious. Netflix has been pushing 4K content aggressively for years, and smart TVs, streaming sticks, and gaming consoles have all supported 4K Netflix for nearly as long as Edge has. Chrome's holdout meant millions of desktop users were watching lower-resolution streams on perfectly capable hardware simply because of browser limitations. Whether this update came from pressure by Netflix, competitive concerns about Edge, or finally sorting out technical and licensing hurdles remains unclear.
