The Yamuna River, Delhi's lifeline for centuries, has effectively disappeared. Ground observations confirm the water level has plummeted approximately five meters below normal, leaving behind exposed sand dunes where boats once navigated. Pedestrians are now crossing the riverbed on foot, a surreal sight that underscores the severity of this crisis. The Yamuna is one of the most sacred rivers in Hinduism and provides drinking water, irrigation, and industrial supply to the National Capital Region (NCR), home to roughly 30 million people. This isn't just a seasonal dip. Delhi has faced water stress before, particularly during summer months when temperatures regularly exceed 45 degrees Celsius (113 Fahrenheit), but the complete desiccation of major river stretches represents an escalation. The city draws water from multiple sources including the Yamuna, the Ganges Canal system, and groundwater reserves, but the Yamuna accounts for a significant portion of the municipal supply. When a major source fails, the entire distribution network becomes strained, leading to rationing, protests, and in extreme cases, civil unrest. The upstream picture tells part of the story. The Yamuna originates in the Himalayas at Yamunotri glacier and flows through Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh before reaching Delhi. Multiple dams and barrages along this route, including the Hathni Kund Barrage in Haryana, control water release to downstream areas. When these structures hold back water for agricultural use, hydropower generation, or reservoir management, Delhi receives less flow. Climate change has also reduced glacial melt patterns and altered monsoon reliability, shrinking the total water available in the system. The Central Water Commission (CWC), which monitors river flows across India, has documented declining discharge rates in Himalayan-fed rivers over the past two decades, with the Yamuna showing particularly sharp drops during pre-monsoon months. Pollution compounds the scarcity in ways most people don't grasp. Even when water does flow through Delhi, the Yamuna is so contaminated with industrial effluent, sewage, and agricultural runoff that large sections are biologically dead, with dissolved oxygen levels near zero. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has repeatedly classified stretches of the Yamuna in Delhi as unfit for any use, including bathing. This means that even limited water releases might not translate to usable drinking water without extensive and expensive treatment. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB), the city's water utility, operates treatment plants with a combined capacity of roughly 935 million gallons per day (MGD), but raw water quality directly affects treatment costs and effectiveness. When the river runs essentially dry, even those treatment plants become irrelevant. The political dimension is explosive and multi-layered. Water disputes between Delhi and neighboring Haryana have repeatedly landed in courts, with Delhi's government (currently led by the Aam Aadmi Party, or AAP) accusing upstream states of deliberately withholding water. The Supreme Court of India has had to intervene multiple times to adjudicate these inter-state water conflicts under Article 262 of the Constitution, which governs river water disputes. With a dried-up Yamuna visible to millions of Delhi residents, the pressure on state and national governments to resolve this crisis will intensify rapidly. The image of people walking across a dead river in the nation's capital is politically untenable, especially with national elections potentially on the horizon. This isn't abstract policy failure, it's visible catastrophe that voters can literally walk across.
