The warning signs are everywhere but we're ignoring them because famine feels like a historical artifact, something that happens in grainy photos from the 1980s. Ethiopia is facing food insecurity again. Yemen is already there. Sri Lanka collapsed into chaos in 2022 partly because it couldn't afford food and fuel imports. Pakistan floods in 2022 destroyed crops and displaced 33 million people. These aren't isolated incidents, they're tremors before the earthquake. The difference between our world and the one where billions starve is about six good harvests and political leaders who prioritize feeding people over scoring points.
Here's the uncomfortable truth: every famine in modern history was preventable, and the next one will be too.
