In a recent demonstration, a YouTuber known as PortalRunner uploaded a video that presents distinct content based on the viewer's selected resolution. At 1080p, the video displays one set of images, while at 360p, a completely different set appears. This effect leverages YouTube's video encoding and downsampling processes. When a video is uploaded to YouTube, creators are encouraged to provide the highest possible resolution. YouTube then re-encodes the video to generate lower-resolution versions for users with varying internet speeds. Notably, 1080p and 720p videos are processed at 60 frames per second (FPS), whereas 360p and lower resolutions are processed at 30 FPS. This difference in frame rates can be exploited to hide content in the discarded frames of lower-resolution versions. PortalRunner's technique involves embedding images in the even-numbered frames of the 60 FPS 1080p video. These frames are dropped during the downsampling to 30 FPS for 360p, effectively concealing the images from viewers at that resolution. Additionally, by understanding how downsampling works-where YouTube averages groups of pixels to create lower-resolution versions-PortalRunner crafted images that disappear when averaged to a single background-colored pixel at 360p. This method ensures that the hidden content remains visible only at higher resolutions. This innovative approach highlights the potential for creative expression within the constraints of YouTube's platform.
